The Gypsey Race is a chalk stream running through the Great Wold Valley. It is Europe’s most northerly chalk stream, making it an important habitat and the only surface stream on the High Wolds.
The Gypsey Race rises in Duggleby and flows east through a number of High Wold villages, disappearing for some parts of its course and then re-appearing after the winter aquifer re-charging. These sporadic appearances give the stream its name.
The waterway eventually enters the North Sea through Bridlington Harbour, and is a focal point of the town’s regeneration through the Bridlington Town Centre Area Action Plan.
Aside from this, the Gypsey Race runs through mainly private agricultural land and has been designated as a priority sensitive farming catchment.
