Market Weighton Canal and River Foulness Action Plan

A forgotten waterway could be an important link?
An article by Gordon Shields

During the consultation phase of the Market Weighton Canal and River Foulness Action Plan (2012), there was wide consensus amongst the participants that the canal could form an important multi-user link between the Trans Pennine Trail – which runs along the north bank of the Humber Estuary, meeting the canal at Weighton Lock – and the Yorkshire Wolds Way/Hudson Way along with other local recreational routes at Market Weighton.

This ambition would necessitate suitable improvements to its towpath. In localities where there are some access difficulties, short diversions away from the towpath would be needed. Signage would also be required, for example at Weighton Lock to inform users about the Trans Pennine Trail and the attractions and facilities further up the canal. The corridor of the Market Weighton Canal contains a less dense network of public rights of way than many other areas. The footpaths and bridleways along the corridor need improvement in places and routes are sometimes discontinuous, for example stopping at parish boundaries.

However, there is a near continuous route along the length of the canal itself, some of it bridleway and some of it footpath. To realise the trail’s potential, walkers and other users will need encouragement to explore it through the provision of good signage and interpretation that will tempt them to walk the existing trails and venture off them to visit Newport, Holme on Spalding Moor, Market Weighton and other places of interest, such as North Cave Wetlands.

We now need your input to update the views of all of those interested parties as we begin to plan and design the various aspects of the trail. Please contact any of the individuals below with your comments, ideas and opinions. We will also be looking for volunteers to work with us later in the year, so if you would like to get involved in this project, please let us know.

About the Action Plan

The Market Weighton Canal and River Foulness Action Plan was commissioned by Newport Parish Council on behalf of a wider steering group. The East and North Yorkshire Waterways Partnership provided the funding for this study.

The Market Weighton Canal and River Foulness Action Plan sets out a long term vision for the two waterways with defined practical actions. The emphasis is focused on creating new linkages with surrounding villages and visitor attractions and involving the local community.

Sustainability is at the core of the study together with the integration of economic, community and environmental issues, which are set within the scope of the waterways’ statutory flood management and land drainage functions.

Gordon Shields the community leader for the project said:

“We hope that the local communities will join together with us to develop the Market Weighton Canal and River Foulness area to enhance its contribution for the social and environmental benefit of all.”
