Market Weighton Canal Trail

Progress Overview

In December 2019, the Market Weighton Canal Trail Management Group gratefully received a grant from the Sancton Hill Wind Farm Community Fund for the installation of a “gateway”, or entry point, onto the trail in Market Weighton town centre. This award will enable the group to install an information board and creative seating in the Memorial Playing Field to introduce walkers to the trail, encourage them to explore it further and find out more about other walks and amenities in the local area.

In January 2020, we also received confirmation of a contribution from a bequest from a private donor from the Trans Pennine Trail Members Steering Group and Executive, for which we are very grateful. This gift helps us to demonstrate support for the project and adds to the match we can bring to funding applications.

With the onset of lock down came the announcement that the National Lottery Heritage Fund would be suspending its regular grant schemes and diverting its funding to support organisations and initiatives affected by the virus. This meant that our bid for a National Lottery Grant for Heritage that was submitted in February 2020 was withdrawn. We are however now reviewing the viability of this programme given recent announcements from the funder.

Since the beginning of the project, we have had positive interactions with a number of land owners, groups, town and parish councils and other stakeholders to develop the project and make sure that our aims are compatible with their interests. These key contacts include, but are not limited to:

  •  Blacktoft Parish Council
  • Broomfleet Parish Council
  • East Riding of Yorkshire Council
  • Environment Agency
  • Gilberdyke Parish Council
  • Holme Heritage
  • Holme on Spalding Moor Parish Council
  • Ouse and Humber Drainage Board
  • Private landowners
  • Ramblers Association
  • Trans Pennine Trail Executive Committee
  • Yorkshire Water

During lock down, the Government re-asserted its commitment to walking and cycling as part of the response to Covid-19 and as part of their drive to promote better health and wellbeing. Because of this, the management group believes that the formalisation of the Market Weighton Canal Trail as a branded heritage walking route has become all the more relevant and we will continue to push forward.
